The Biblical Picture of the Tongue

The Series on the tongue

Pastor Anthony Berry

You know; it’s funny the way that some people are so quiet and keep their feelings to themselves.  You won’t know if they are in pain, sick or what is on their mind in general the only answer that you will get from these types of people are yes and no.  This is a good thing because the bible says to let your conversation be yes, and no because everything else that you say is evil (II Matt. 5:37).  Then there are those who run off at the mouth at all times, telling the latest gossip so on and so forth.  There are also those that have a combination of the two, and are wise about what they let come out of their mouths.  We often call someone a big mouth but what are we really saying.  The mouth is of very little use without the tongue.

It is miraculous the way that God put our most important organs inside our body. The doorway to the heart (or mind, and spirit) is the tongue; the doorway for the tongue is the mouth.  Notice how the mouth has to open so that you can speak.  We speak so that we can communicate what is in our minds. Which brings me to the first passage of scripture; Matt. 12:34

34. o generation of vipers, how can ye being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

How can evil speak good?  I love to analyze things from the very beginning and would like to start in genesis with this contribution concerning the tongue.  God created all things with his mouth because “God said”.  We are created in God’s image and after his likeness; so I believe that it is safe to assume that God has a mouth and a tongue because “he said”.  All of these things that God said and created by his Word; God said was they were good.  It is not recorded that all of God’s creation had the power to speak, but we find that he touched the tongue of the Ass (Num 22:28), and that the serpent was more subtle than any other beast of the field.  This serpent could speak, and decided to ask questions of Eve, Adam’s wife.  Eve is the tool by which evil touches the tongue of man.  When she is asked if God said that they could eat from all of the trees in the Garden she says no.  They could eat from all of the trees except for the tree that was in the middle of the Garden.  This was fine because this was the way that the commandment was given to Adam.  The only problem is she said GOD said that in the day that they ate of it or even touched it they would surely die.  God didn’t say anything about touching the tree; so Eve lied on God.  The serpent knew that God didn’t say anything about touching the tree; he was there when God gave Adam the commandment concerning the tree.  Even had not been created yet; this is how the first evil of man was conceived by the tongue.
